Probably, one of the most popular classroom phrase is, “I hate Math”! But is the subject really that difficult? Are math problems “tough nut to crack”? Let’s have some fun. Answers the following Math-related questions and find out how good are you in Math.

1. In his will, a farmer left his eleven cows to his three sons. Half were to go to the eldest, one-fourth to the middle and one-sixth to the youngest. How was it done?

2. A car dealer was asked how many cars he had on stock. He answered, “If one-half, one-third, and one-fourth of the numbers of cars were added together, they would make 13.” How many cars did he have in stock?

3. Find the number which when increased by 3, then miltiplying the product by ¾, then dividing by 7, diminished by 1/3 of the quotient, multiplying the number by itself, subtracting 52, getting the square root, adding 8, and dividing by 10 gives the number 2?

4. If it takes 3 minutes to cut a carrot into 3 pieces, how long would it take to cut a carrot into 4 pieces?

5.How much dirt is in a hole 2 inches long, 3 inches wide, and 3 inches deep?

6. If a tray of eggs sells fro 20 pesos per dozen, which costs less, ½ dozen dozen eggs, or 6 dozen eggs?

7. A train 1 km long travels through a tunnel 1 km long at a speed of 1km/hr. How long will it take the train to pass completely through the tunnel?

8.Using only a 7-minute and an 11-minute hour glass, how can you boil an egg for exactly 15 minutes?

9. A wolf, a rabbit, and a carrot must be moved across a river in a boat which can hold only one besides the boatman. How must the boatman carry them so that the rabbit shall not it the carrot; or the wolf, the goat?

10. A dog chases a rabbit which is already 150 feet away. Every time the dog jumps 9 feet, the rabbit at the same time, jumps 7 feet. How many jumps does the dog have to make to overtake the rabbit?

Answers:

1. Eldest = ½ x 11 = 5.5; to the nearest units = 6
Middle = ¼ x 11 = 2.75; to the nearest units = 3
Youngest = 1/6 x 11 = 1.75; to the nearest units = 2

2. 12

Let n = number of cars
½ n + 1/3 n + ¼ n = 13; get the LCD
13/12 n = 13
n = 13 x 12/13
n = 12

3. The answer is 28; very practical one

4. 4 1/2 minutes (4 and 30 seconds) Don’t believe me, then go cut one yourself.

5. Nothing. How can you store something into a hole.

6. Both will cost the same.

7. 2 hours.

Speed = distance x time
1km/hr = 1km x time
1km/hr x 1/1km = time
1hr = time the train is completely inside the tunnel and will take another hour to completely pass through it.

8. Procedure:

a. Use the 7-min and 11-min hour glass at the same time. b. Once the 7-min glass hour is consumed, turn the 11-min glass hour upside down. ( 11 min – 7 min = 4). c. Start boiling the egg. When the 11- min glass hour is done, turn it again upside down. (4 min + 11 min = 15 min).

9. Solution:

Cross the river carrying the rabbit with you. Leave the carrot and cross back. Its now the carrot’s turn, but this time carry back the rabbit as you return to get the wolf. Bring the wolf in, leaving behind the goat. Lastly, return and get the goat. Whooh! Seems a hard work.

10. On the 76th jump.

N = number of jump.
9 n – 7 n = 150
n = 150/2 = 75
On the 75th jump, both dog and rabbit are on the same footing.

Our Solar System’s Extremes

From the biggest to the smallest, from the hottest to the coldest, here are our solar system’s extremes.

Our solar system consists of the sun, the eight planet namely: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. It also includes: the five dwarf planets, their 173 satellites or moons, thousands of comets, asteroids and interplanetary dusts. Just like our Earth that has extremes, the solar system takes pride of having its own extremes, below are some of them.

The Densest Planet

Earth, where millions of species including humans inhabit, is the only place in the universe where life is known to exist. Its outer surface is divided into tectonic plates, that slowly travel across the surface over periods of many millions of years. About 71% of the surface is covered with water, the remainder consisting of continents and islands. Liquid water is, of course, essential for life as we know it. The Earth’s atmosphere is composed of 77% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, with traces of argon, carbon dioxide and water.

The Least-Dense Planet

Saturn is the second largest planet in the solar system and the planet with the least density. It has an equatorial diameter of 119,300 kilometers (74,130 miles). It would take 29.5 Earth years for Saturn to orbit around the sun and its day is 10 hours, 39 minutes long. Hydrogen with small amounts of helium and methane composed the planet‘s atmosphere. Its density is lesser than water, so Saturn would float in water if a large ocean could be found.

The wind near the equator that blows mostly in an easterly direction could reach a speed of 500 meters a second (1,100 miles an hour). Its ring system makes Saturn one of the most beautiful objects in the solar system. The rings are divided into a number of different parts, that include the bright A and B rings and a dimmer C ring. Saturn has 30 known satellites and more are being discovered. And lastly, Saturn is the most flattened planet in our Solar System; the difference between its polar and equatorial diameters is about 10%.

The Biggest Planet

Jupiter is the largest planet within the Solar System and the fourth brightest object in the sky (after the Sun, the Moon and Venus). Would you believe that all the other planets in our Solar System could fit inside Jupiter. Jupiter has a mass of 1.9 x 1027 kg and is 142,800 kilometers (88,736 miles) across the equator. It has 28 known satellites that include: Callisto, Europa, Ganymede and Io.

It has a simple ring system that is made up a main ring, an inner halo, and a Gossamer ring (once taught to be a single ring but images send by the space probe Galileo tells it actually are two rings. Jupiter is primarily composed of hydrogen (90%)with a small proportion of helium about 10%. It is also the planet where you would feel the heaviest. If you weigh 100 pounds on earth, you will weigh 254 pounds on Jupiter. It is also the planet with the Shortest Day: A day on Jupiter only takes 9.8 Earth hours!

The Smallest Planet

After Pluto was declared a dwarf planet in 2006, Mercury is now recognized as the smallest planet in the solar system measuring 4879 km along its equator. Mercury is bare and rocky, with many craters and consists of approximately 70% metallic and 30% silicate material. Mercury is extremely dense with a density of 5.4 grams per cubic centimeter. Mercury is also the planet with the shortest year: it only takes 88 earth days for it to orbit the Sun.

Uranus is the third largest in the solar system. This huge, icy planet about 51,118 km in diameter, is covered with clouds and has at least 22 moons and 11 rings. A day on Uranus takes 17 hours 14 minutes and it revolves around the sun once every 84.01 Earth years. Uranus is a frozen, gaseous planet where the atmosphere is consists of 83% hydrogen, 15% helium and 2% methane.

Uranus, whose axis is tilted 97.9 degrees on its side. Unlike other planets that rotate on an axis almost perpendicular to the plane of the ecliptic, Uranus spins on its side (along its orbital path), thus resulting to extreme seasons.

The Hottest Planet

Venus which is 12,100 km. in diameter is the hottest planet in our solar system. 95% of its atmosphere is carbon dioxide and nitrogen, sulfuric acid and other elements comprised the remaining 3.5%. At the surface, the temperature ranges from 900F+/- 50F (about 500°C +/- 32°C). Venus is covered with thick clouds that create a greenhouse effect that makes it very hot.

Also, Venus is the planet with the longest day; orbiting the sun once every 224.7 days in a counterclockwise direction at an average distance of about 108 million km. A day on Venus takes 243 Earth days (called a sidereal day). Venus rotates very slowly that its sidereal day (one complete rotation on its axis) is longer than its year (224.7 Earth days).

The Coldest Planet with the Longest Year

Now that Pluto is considered as a dwarf planet, Neptune is now the coldest planet in the solar system. Since it is the farthest planet from the sun, its outer atmosphere is one of the coldest places making it’s temperature an icy -125 degrees Celsius. Neptune has a mass of 1.0243 × 1026 kg, and an equatorial diameter of 49,500 kilometers. radius of 24764 km.

A day on Neptune is 16 hours and 6.7 minutes and orbits the Sun every 165 Earth years making it the longest year in the solar system. It has eight moons and has a set of four faint and narrow rings. Neptune has the fastest and strongest winds on any planet that could measure up to 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) an hour.

The Biggest Moon

Ganymede is the largest moon in the solar system and also the biggest moon of Jupiter. It has a diameter of 5,262 km (3,280 miles)and is most likely made up of a crust of rock and ice with a mantle composed of water/ice. It has mountains, valleys, craters and lava flows but has no known atmosphere.

The Only Two Moons With Atmosphere

Titan (photo above), a moon of Saturn and Triton, the biggest moon of Neptune, are the only two moons with dense atmosphere. Next to Ganymede, Titan is the second largest moon in the solar system that has a diameter almost 50% larger than Earth’s moon. It is largely composed of rocky material and water ice and its atmosphere is mainly composed of nitrogen, methane and ethane clouds.

The Smoothest Object

Europa, a large and unique moon of Jupiter, is among the brightest and the smoothest object in the solar system. Its surface made up mostly of ice lacks heavily cratered appearance but instead has lines and cracks wrapping the exterior. Europa is roughly 3,160 kilometers (1,950 miles) in diameter.

10 Useless Human Body Parts

A list of human body parts that experts believe are useless. Are they really useless? Or perhaps the experts haven’t yet truly discovered their true functions.

A few years back, I was bothered by a stomach pain that required medical attention. I was diagnosed as having an acute appendicitis that needed an urgent operation. Since school classes had just started, my father asked the doctor if they could postpone the operation. But the doctors are too apprehensive, and said, “the healing process will only requires just a week, besides appendix is a useless organ”. Shocked and surprised to hear those statements, I begun questioning my self, “are there really are useless body parts?”

Now, I’ve done some researched and found out that experts believed there are at least 10 body parts that are useless. Before you continue reading the rest of the article, I will leave you a puzzling question: do you agree with the experts findings or you have a dissenting opinion. It is your call. Here is the list:

Plica Semilunaris

Yes, you have a third eyelid and it is called the plica semilunaris. It is a small fold of bulbar conjunctiva located on the inner corner of the eye. An accessory organ of the eye, plica semilunaris is a left over from what’s known as a “nictitating membrane.” For most mammals, it is a vestigal organ, which is still present in chickens, lizards and sharks. But for humans, plica semilunaris serves an important purpose: it produces a fatty substance (rheum) that collects foreign bodies such as dirt and dust from entering the eye and damaging the cornea. This foreign bodies is then deposited hear the tear duct, ready to be brushed away in the morning.

Body Hair

Three million years ago, human were once hairier. Earth temperature at that time was much colder than today so our body hair is a good insulation for the colder climate. But by the time Homo erectus arrived, the ability to sweat meant we could shed our woolly ways. Today, having much body hair is annoying that people having this predicament seek the help of dermatologists. Thanks to the now popular hair waxing, excess body hair are remove with ease. So the question arises, “Do we really need body hair?”

Sinuses

Humans have four pairs of sinuses that are found in the bones of the head and face. These air-filled spaces are lined with a moist, thin layer of tissue called a mucous membrane. The mucous membrane secretes mucus that traps dust and germs that are in the air we breathe. Doctors don’t really know much about sinuses but some researchers think they keep the head from being too heavy. Sinuses also give you the pitch and tone of our voice.

Adenoids

Adenoids are lumpy mass of lymphoid tissue that help protect kids from getting sick. They situated at the very back of the nose and the roof of the mouth. Most people’s adenoids are not even in use after a person’s third year. In fact, adenoids usually shrink after about age 5, and by the teenage years they often practically disappear. Adenoids do important work as infection fighters for babies and little kids. But they become less important once a kid gets older and the body develops other ways to fight germs. Also, they are prone to swelling and infection.

Tonsils

Tonsils are clusters of lymphoid tissue on either side of the throat. They act as part of the immune system to help protect against infection. But are they really important. Researches lead us to believe that adenoids are developed to deal with certain types of infections, such as worms or other parasites. It is clear that in many cases, the adenoids become “dysfunctional” and are more of a liability than an asset since they are prone to swelling and infection.

Coccyx

The coccyx or the tailbone, is the final segment of the human vertebral column. It is made up of three to five separate or fused vertebrae held in place by joints and ligaments. In humans and other tailless primates since Nakalipithecus (a Miocene hominoid), the coccyx is the left over of a vestigial tail, but still not entirely useless. It is part of a weight-bearing support structure which act as a support for a sitting person. Also, it serve as a place for the insertion of some of the muscles of the pelvic floor.

Arrector Pili

Arrector pili are tiny microscopic muscle tissues that connect hair follicles to the dermis. When stimulated, the arrector pili will contract and cause the hair to stand on end when we needed to appear bigger and scarier, causing goose bumps. They exist in most mammals including humans but in some animals arrector pili serve an important function; acting as insulation to keep their body warm. Other animals, such as porcupines use them as a defensive mechanism when threatened by enemies.

Wisdom Teeth

Third Molar teeth also known as wisdom teeth are the last teeth to appear in your mouth. This generally occurs between the ages of 17 and 25. Back in the day, when man ate rough diet but didn‘t bother to floss afterwards, there resulted an over excessive wear of their teeth. Therefore, when those “wisdom teeth,” came in, they were welcomed. Nowadays, modern diet, which is much softer, and the popularity of fluoride and orthodontic tooth straightening procedures have just made molar teeth them a huge pain when they enter the mouth.

Appendix

The appendix is a blind ended tube connected to the cecum that averages 10 cm in length. It is located near the connection of the small intestine and the large intestine. Evolutionists claimed that the appendix is a part of a large digestive system during man’s early plant-eating years and has no function in modern human. However, present day researches and studies suggest that it may produce that are helpful in the function of the human colon.

Male Nipples

For centuries, men have pondered on why men have nipples and what are its functions. The most logical explanation experts gave is that during conception, an unborn child has the potential to be either male or female. During conception, the embryo has set of 23 pairs of chromosomes. One pair of chromosomes determines sex: XX chromosomes for female and XY means male. The other 22 pairs (autosomes) supply the standard equipment that all humans get. As we all know, nipples are beneficial to women but male nipples– I believe they are useless.
