Manny Pacquiao Six Losses: An In-depth Analysis

A closer look at the circumstances that surrounded Manny Pacquiao’s six boxing carreer losses.

The pride of the Filipino nation, Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao is today’s best pound for pound boxer. A great achievement for the 34-yr old warrior who also won eight world titles in different weight divisions. His professional record stands at: 57 wins, six losses, and two draws. Tucked in his belt are 38 wins by knockout, but six losses have blemished his boxing career. Below is a short analysis of each of the fight, he lost and short video clips of the said fights is added for readers to have a glimpse on how each setback happened.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Rustico Torrecampo (1996)

Starting his career in the light-flyweight division, Pacquiao compiled an immaculate record of 11 wins. But just like any typical 16-year old, he started to gain weight and have difficulty meeting the light-flyweight division weight limit. On his 12th fight, Pacquiao was over the limit and was required to use heavier gloves on fight night. This puts him on the disadvantage. On the third round, Torrecampo landed a fatal blow to Manny’s abdomen that saw him hit the deck and was unable to beat the 10-count. Pacquiao lost the bout via a third round technical knockout (TKO). Unfortunately, Pacquiao never avenged that loss.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Medgoen Singsurat (1999)

After his sorry loss to Torrecampo, Pacquiao decided to campaign in the flyweight division. He challenged then reigning WBA Flyweight champion Chatchai Sasakul of Thailand for the title. He stopped the champion on the eight rounds thus winning his first world title. In his second defense, Pacquiao again had problems meeting the weight limit and lost the belt to Medgoen Singsurat; even before entering the ring as he surpassed the weight limit of 112 lbs (51 kg). Even if the energy was sapped out of his body and was visibly drained Pacquiao decided to go on with the fight. From the opening bell, it is clearly evident that Pacquiao had no chance at all to win the fight. Sluggish and too slow, he was an easy target for his foe. In the third round, Pacquiao absorbed some barrages of body blows that sent him reeling to the canvas. In pain, he was unable to stand up and was counted out. Like his first loss, he failed to avenge the defeat.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Erik Morales (2005)

Moving up in weight after making it big as a featherweight, Pacquiao aims to steal the world super-featherweight crown from then champion Eric Morales. It was a bloody fight with both fighters suffered cuts. Losing a close and bloody 12 round decision, Pacquiao was clearly out-boxed by Morales. Sticking to his game plan and at times taking a southpaw stand to confuse Pacquiao, the savvy Mexican had an answer for everything Pacquiao could offer. At the end of this classic fight, Morales simply out-boxed Pacquiao to win by unanimous decision after 12 rounds.

In their celebrated rematch, Pacquiao stunned the boxing world when he knockout Morales in the 10th round. In their third encounter, Pacquiao easily dispatched Morales in the third round.

Manny Pacquiao has greatly improved since his past losses. He is now a complete fighter — Bigger, wiser, stronger, well-conditioned and full of confidence.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley (2012)

The much-publicized boxing fight should have been labeled as “Shocker of the Century”. Just as he promised, unbeaten American Timothy Bradley shocked the whole boxing world. He won a controversial split decision over Manny Pacquiao — ending 8-division champion Manny Pacquiao’s 15-fight winning streak and handing the Filipino ring icon his first defeat in seven years.

Millions of boxing fans across the world saw Pacquiao dominated the entire bout — but two judges saw it otherwise. Bradley’s victory came from the judges’ scorecards. Judges C.J. Ross and Duane Ford had it for Bradley, 115-113. The third judge, Jerry Roth had it for Pacquiao, 115-113.

The crowd at the MGM Grand arena booed, when the verdict was announced. Promoter Bob Arum fumed, while Pacman was shocked by the decision. Bradley said, “I thought I won the fight.” It was a super competitive fight, but the Filipino ring icon seemed to dominate the bout by connecting more, and landing the harder punches. According to CompuBox, Pacquiao landed 94 more punches than and seemed to land the more telling blows.

After the fight, promoter Bob Arum said there will be a rematch on Nov. 10. As of this day, the said rematch is still up in the air. Comes December, the Filipino ring warrior is set to meet arch-rival Juan Miguel Marquez for the fourth time.

A rematch was held on April 12, 2014, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Paradise, Nevada. Pacquiao won the fight via unanimous decision and took Bradley's WBO Welterweight title, ending Bradley's undefeated streak.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez IV (2012)

Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao suffered one of the biggest losses of his life after he was knocked out by arch rival Juan Manuel Marquez in 6 rounds in front of a dominantly pro-Marquez crowd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, December 8 (Sunday Manila time) to punctuate what has been an epic rivalry between the two.

It was a very competitive fight and for six rounds, the two fighters battled like they always do. Marquez took control of the early rounds and even scored a flash knockdown. However, Pacquiao got more aggressive and turned the fight in his favor. He bloodied Marquez, broke his nose, and got him wobbling in the ring. But it was the same aggressiveness that caused his downfall. Marquez timed a perfect counter punch which landed flush on the jaw of the rushing Pacquiao. Kenny Bayless waved off the fight when he realized that Pacquiao was unconscious and unfit to continue.

This is Pacquiao's first loss by knockout since 1999.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather (2015)

Manny Pacquiao suffered his sixth lose at the hands of undefeated five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr. in the much awaited fight billed as The Fight of the Century, that took place on May 2, 2015. Mayweather frustrated Manny Pacquiao, piling up enough points to win a unanimous decision in their welterweight title bout.

Pacquiao did what he wanted to do, chasing Mayweather around the ring most of the fight. But he was never able to land a sustained volume of punches, often looking frustrated with his hands finding nothing but air as Mayweather worked his defensive wizardry once again.

Pacquiao's camp blamed the loss on Manny's busted shoulder, which he suffered during one of his sparring sessions prior to the fight.

  1. Pacquiao has the tendency to be complacent and out of focus especially now he has politics and showbiz to deal with.

  7. He should have stop boxing after those many victories, it could have been a perfect record for him. But as the saying goes, "No guts, no glories" and that's the hard lesson learned.

  8. The first two losses aren't big deals for me; he was inexperienced and getting the hang of pro fighting. The last two, however, are different stories. The one with Bradley was such a shame as well because in my opinion, Manny was a little too cautious in the fight. He COULD HAVE put down Bradley, but now that he's a bit older, he seems to have been more careful in his fighting as well.

  9. He didn't lose to Bradley, did he? Kase they reviewed the fight, and the result came out that Pacquiao actually won the fight, not Bradley..

He's got so much on his plate right now, but still hoping he'd win against Marquez.. THeir rematch after rematch is starting to get out of hand.. I think twice would have been enough.. Sana naman, this time pag natalo si Marquez, matanggap na nya..

  10. OF the four losses, only the fight to Bradley was disappointing. It was a biased and unfair decision made by the judges. Spectators saw clearly that it should have been Pacquiao who won the fight.

There are a lot of factors to consider in the upcoming fight this December. Let us all remember that Pacman is not getting any younger.

It may go in favor or against him. It will go in his favor if he'd be more clever and calculated with all his moves making them unpredictable so that the opposing camp will keep guessing the entire duration of the fight what he's up to.

It will go against him if the zest and energy of youth is lost. However, I believe Pacman's killer instincts and champion blows are still imminent.

I am proud of this man whom I used to see at the bank when he was still a rising boxing champ. He has gone a long, long way and the rest of us Generals are all proud of him.

  18. If Pacquiao losses to Marquez, then this will be the end of his career. If he wins he might have the opportunity to fight Mayweather for the biggest purse and glory ever to his career.
