Cola Drinks May Raise Blood Pressure

In two recent medical researches involving around 100,000+ women, findings showed that those who consumed one caffeinated cola drink daily had a slightly higher risk of high blood pressure. While those who drank more colas daily had an even higher risk. Studies also showed that the effect of coca cola to a patient blood pressure was found to be consistent both for younger and older women.

In the first study, researchers found that those who drank one can of cola increased their risk for blood pressure by nine percent and by 13 percent in the second study. Researchers also found that women consummating more than three cans of cola a day have an even higher risk of getting high blood pressure.

Though, the two studies show that there was a strong connection between caffeinated cola consumption and high blood pressure, the result did not completely established that cola drinks cause high blood pressure. Even if the study was done just by comparing two women who were matched for age, weight, physical activity, those who took alcohol, and smoke, researchers were in agreement that cola drinking remained a major risk factor.

Researchers concluded that some ingredients in cola drinks like caramel coloring in diet colas and the corn syrup in sugared colas — might be the culprits that cause high blood pressure. Further studies are ongoing to find out and identify what is really the link between these cola ingredients and high blood pressure.

Also, the study revealed that women who are regular or heavy coffee drinkers do not risk developing high blood pressure.

  1. Glad to hear this warning Papaleng. Thanks for a well researched article. Mabuti na lng at I am not a cola drinker. Not fond of it as kasi masakit sa lalamunan. I will definitely share this to one of my friend na cola addict na. He could waste up 1 liter per meal! And cant get past meals without drinking. So imagine, he drinks 2 liters per day since sa breakfast lng sya di umiinom nito. Risky. Risky.

Coming over thru COMEX. IM BACK!

  2. that's good to know they are looking at what exactly the ingredient that links up to high blood pressure in the colas, since we may get them in other foods too. anyway, am not a soda drinker, i love water so much. :)

but i do drink one cup coffee a day without sugar, just almond milk. i am not affected by the caffeine in coffee at all, so i am getting the anti-oxidant benefits in the coffee. :)

  4. Good thing I'm not a fan of sodas. Aside from the risk of high blood pressure, it's also cancerous (due to sugar).

  5. I am not a fan of soda because of my hyperacidity issues. It's really bad for our health. My husband is addicted to it though. I always remind him not to overdo it. This post is a very good reminder especially for those who can't get past a day without a glass of cola.

  6. I love drinking pop Papaleng but I really try not too :-) I'd rather drink water instead. Pop has too much sugar in it. The picture is driving me crazy Papaleng with that ice too because that is how I drink my pop with so much ice in my glass :-)

  7. I ditched all kinds of soda many moons ago. I used to be a Coke girl, but if was able to quit cold turkey when I decided it was time to stop. With my essential HBP it was the right thing to do.

  19. I've been there and finally got rid of my addiction to Coca Cola. Reading the ingredients on the label and checking each one of them (internet) really opened my eyes. Now sticking to water and freshly squeezed fruit juices. Saved a lot on medication, stress, getting sick and hospital bills. Healthy is the only way to go. :)

  22. This is one of the reason I'm trying to minimize soft drinks. I think the caffeine also helps raise blood pressure.
