Sleepers are categorized into four types: side winders, stomach slumbers, back floppers, and rock-and-rollers. A right pillow suits each sleeping position. It is up to you to pick the right pillow that will work well for you. Read on to learn more about the right pillows that match certain sleeping positions.
Probably, the most comfortable sleeping position is to sleep on your side. Yet many are complaining of experiencing neck pains. The reason – a pillow that is far too low. It is very important to choose a pillow that will support the head suitably to keep a straight spine. The right pillow acts as a stabilizer and not allowing the head from sinking toward the bed. To avoid neck and shoulders pains to occur, it is best to raise the pillow by putting a piece of towel underneath, or adding another pillow until you feel comfortable.
As a rule, back floppers (back sleepers) need a lower pillow than side winders (side sleepers). Back floppers, specially those whose heads extend forward may try using feather pillow or higher pillow. To achieve the best back-sleeping posture, raise or lower your pillow using foam or towel until you get the most ideal position for your head.
If you can avoid it, refrain from being a stomach slumber! Doing so will force you to set your neck into a very twisted position. However, if you are a stomach slumber, then it is best that you avoid using any pillow. A good substitute for stomach sleepers is to try creating a half-lying sleeping position – lying on your side and then half rolling onto your stomach. This position will give ample head and neck movement.
Rock and Rollers:
Spending the night moving from side to back to stomach throughout the night, are what we call the rock and rollers. This sleeping habit call for a more intricate sleeping arrangement. Rock and Rollers need to be confined to an orthopedic pillow – a pillow that is lower in the center and higher around the edges. Moving on your side will allow you to rest on the pillow’s higher portion, and rolling onto your back will allow your head to rest.
